OTTAWA, Canada | Mark Gottfried chose the Labor Day weekend to take his University of Alabama basketball team for international play because he wanted his young team to get more experience and be tested. On Sunday night the Crimson Tide got just that when it played at Carleton University. The Ravens have won five straight Canadian collegiate national championships since 2003 and have two Canadian national team members.
Add to that a crowd of an estimated standing room only crowd of 3,500 that watched Carleton defeat Alabama 83-72 in exhibition play.
After swapping leads throughout most of the first half, Carleton took the game’s lead for good with 3:40 remaining in the first half at 29-28 on free throws. Alabama trailed by two, 36-34 at halftime in a first 20 minutes of play, led by Richard Hendrix’s nine points and six rebounds at the break.
Alonzo Gee led Alabama with 18 points. Sophomore Justin Tubbs had nine points .
