Tide golf team finishes fourth at Golfweek Preview

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. | The University of Alabama golf team shot 2-over in Sunday’s final round to move up three spots and finish fourth at the 2007 Ping/Golfweek Preview.

The two-day tournament was at Purdue’s Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex-Kampen Course. Alabama shot 301-290-290-881 to finish 17-over in its third tournament of the season and third in three weeks.

Three Crimson Tide golfers finished among the top 20 individuals, led by Gator Todd. The senior shot 1-over in the final round to finish 2-over for the tournament and tied for 9th (73-72-73-218). He birdied three holes in his final round. Junior Matt Hughes finished a shot back and tied for 11th at 3-over (76-70-73-219). Senior Mark Harrell birdied six holes in his final round Sunday to post a 3-under 69 . Harrell finished tied for 19th (78-74-69-221). Matthew Swan finished tied for 37th at 9-over (74-76-75-225) and Joseph Sykora finished tied for 59th at 15-over (81-74-76-231).

Charlotte’s Stefan Wiedergruen shot 4-under in the final round to take the individual win (70-71-68-209) and lead Charlotte to the team championship in a tournament where 13 of the 15 teams were ranked.

Charlotte finished 3-over for the tournament (288-288-291-867) to win by four against Oklahoma State (871). At third was Southern California (873).

The Tide hosts the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at Birmingham’s Old Overton Club on Oct. 8-9. The field of 12 will include Alabama, Auburn, UAB, Brigham Young, East Tennessee State, Florida, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, North Carolina, Texas, Texas Tech and UNLV.
