Basketball team staying home for postseason

For the first time since the 2000 season, the University of Alabama men’s basketball team will not take part in postseason play.

The Crimson Tide, which finished 17-16, did not receive an invitation to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) on Sunday. Crimson TIde officials were approached by the new College Basketball Invitational, but UA officials declined the opportunity to take part in that first-year tournament.

Mykal Riley’s shot at the buzzer that sent the Tide’s SEC Tournament quarterfinal game against Mississippi State into overtime on Friday helped place his name as a selection on the All-Tournament team.

He is the only player on the five-man team who did not play in Sunday’s SEC Championship game. Joining him were tournament MVP Sundiata Gaines and Terrance Woodbury of Georgia and Charles Thomas and Darian Townes of Arkansas. Georgia defeated Arkansas 66-57 on Sunday for the SEC Tournament championship.
