Heptathlon, decathlon highlight Day 2 of Alabama Relays

  • TUSCALOOSA | The Alabama Relays saw its first winners of the meet as four events came to a close Friday at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Complex at the University of Alabama. The Decathlon, Heptathlon and 10,000 meters for both the men and women concluded on day two.

    “It is certainly a great position to be able and kick off the outdoor season here at home,” Alabama head men’s track and field coach Harvey Glance said. “I know our kids are extremely excited to run here at home, being our only home meet of the season so they seem pretty fired up about that.”

    “I am really excited that we are hosting over 700 athletes from teams all over the country and to have them come to our facility and to get a chance to see the University of Alabama.”

    The heptathlon and decathlon came to a close on day two to showcase the first champions of the meet. Ashley Wilhelm, who entered the meet unattached held onto her first day lead to grab the heptathlon title. Wilhelm finished with 5606 points outdistancing the Mississippi State duo of Dorthy Youmans (4812 points) and Laquinta Aaron (4794 points).

    In the decathlon, the Bulldogs continued to show its strength in the multi events with Daryl Brady taking the top honor. Brady edged teammate Joseph Queen with 6642 points to 6522 points. Jager Livingston of Auburn placed third with 6268.

    In the first single track event of the competition, Stephanie Gammon of UAB won the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:28.35. Mackenzie Howe of Kennesaw State followed with a time of 38:01.14 while Lauren Pilcher of Samford placed third, crossing the line at 39:52.27.

    In the men’s event, running unattached from Alabama, Zach Edwards won the 10,000 with a time of 32:06.20. Robert Gunn of Alabama State followed with a time of 32:20.90, while Joffroi Holcombe of Missouri S&T placed third with a time of 32:35.02.

    On top of Edwards taking the first running event of the four-day meet, Kyle Dyar finished sixth overall in the decathlon with a personal best 6056 points. Also in the grueling decathlon for Alabama, competing unattached was Justin Brady. Brady finished ninth overall with 5137 points.

    For the Crimson Tide women, Rachel Robbs completed her first outdoor collegiate heptathlon by placing 10th overall with 4129 points. After winning the shot put yesterday by a comfortable margin, Robbs blew the field away in the javelin by recording a mark of 134-07, defeating heptathlon champ Wilhelm by over 10 feet.

    The Alabama Relays will continue tomorrow for the majority of the single track events at 8:00 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw. The first track event will be the women’s 5,000 meters at 10:30 a.m.

    Fans are encouraged to bring canned foods for the West Alabama Food Bank. Collection bins are located outside the entrance to the Sam Bailey Track Complex.
