UA student-athletes have best fall on record

TUSCALOOSA | According to data released by The University of Alabama’s Office of Student-Athlete Academic Services, the school’s 17 scholarship programs spanning 21 Southeastern Conference-sanctioned sports had the best fall semester on record in 2007 as UA student-athletes achieved a combined grade-point average (GPA) of 3.04.

Eleven of the 17 programs recorded over a 3.0 GPA for the semester and 134 student-athletes had over a 3.5 GPA, also the highest total on record. Forty-one student-athletes in three sports (football, women’s soccer and volleyball) were named to the SEC’s Fall Honor Roll.

Forty-eight of Alabama’s 474 student-athletes (10.1 percent) had a perfect 4.0 for the semester, 134 (28.3 percent) achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the semester, 176 (37.1 percent) earned a GPA of 3.25 or higher during the semester, and 232 (48.9 percent) achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The 211 female student-athletes at Alabama combined for a 3.30 GPA for the semester while their 263 male counterparts achieved a GPA of 2.83. Thirteen of 17 teams achieved a GPA of 2.90 or better and 15 of 17 teams had a GPA of at least 2.80 for the semester.

Alabama’s men’s and women’s golf teams led the way. The women’s golf squad led all Crimson Tide teams with a collective GPA of 3.67 in the fall, the highest single-semester GPA on record by the women’s golf team and the 19th consecutive semester with a 3.1 or better team GPA for the squad. The men’s golf team produced a 3.27 combined GPA.

The men’s basketball team 3.12 GPA for the semester was its best on record, and the football team compiled a 2.64 GPA. The 2007 freshman class recorded a fall GPA of 3.098.
