HOOVER | To the surprise of nobody, the University of Alabama football team was predicted by the media to finish third in the SEC Western Division during Friday's final day of Media Days. The Crimson Tide also had five players named ALL-SEC in the annual media poll. First-team selections were offensive lineman Andre Smith and defensive back Rashad Johnson, while offensive lineman Antoine Caldwell, linebacker Rolando McClain, and return specialist Javier Arenas were all second-team. Of the 70 people who voted (out of 700-plus), Florida was named to team to beat on 36 ballots, followed by Georgia (18) and Auburn (13). LSU, Tennessee and Ole Miss all received one vote each, while the Crimson Tide didn’t receive a first-place vote. In the Western Division, Auburn was picked first on 48 ballots, while LSU received 21 first-place votes and Ole Miss one. The predicted order of finish was Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Arkansas. “I was really excited till I got up this morning, you guys picked us to win the West,” Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said. “Y’all are never right. That puts me in a bind. I don't know what I’m going to tell my team. “Actually we'll use this. It's probably good for us. You know me. You've heard me several times. I'm not big on predictions. But we need something to get us going. Last year we had a good football team. The one thing that we didn't do is we didn't come out of the blocks.” In the Eastern Division, Florida’s 45 first-place votes made it the favorite, ahead of Georgia (23) and Tennessee (two). The predicted order of finish was Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. “They said the same thing two years ago, that we have a tough schedule and couldn't compete,” Kentucky wide receiver Dicky Lyons Jr. said. “But we started 6-1 and proved them wrong. You're always going to have naysayers, people trying to put you down. For me, being a 5-11, white guy as a wide receiver, you’re never expected to play in the SEC in the first place so it's all bulletin board material for inspiration to prove people wrong.” Last year, the media got it right, with 54 of 80 voters picking LSU, ahead of Florida with seven, although Tennessee represented the Eastern Division in the SEC Championship. There were no unanimous All-SEC selections. Florida linebacker wide receiver Percy Harvin came the closest with 68 votes, ahead of Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes (65), Alabama offensive lineman Andre Smith (64), Ole Miss offensive lineman Michael Oher (64), and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow (64). Auburn had the most players named with nine, ahead of LSU’s eight. Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina all had five, although all of the Gators were first-team selections giving them the most.
