BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ South Carolina quarterback Chris Smelley, Vanderbilt linebacker Patrick Benoist and Commodores punter Brett Upson received Southeastern Conference players of the week honors.

Smelley, a Tuscaloosa native, was 22-of-32 passing for a career-high 327 yards and three touchdowns in South Carolina's 31-24 win at Ole Miss to earn Monday's offensive honors.

Benoist led Vanderbilt with 13 tackles in a 14-13 win over Auburn. He also had a sack and a pass breakup.

Upson's 55-yard punt with two minutes left buried the Tigers inside their own 5-yard line.

The offensive lineman of the week was Florida center Maurkice Pouncey. Defensive line honors went to Alabama end Bobby Greenwood.

The SEC freshman of the week was Florida running back Jeffrey Demps.
