Smelley transferring to Alabama

TUSCALOOSA | South Carolina quarterback Chris Smelley has been granted his
release and will transfer to the University of Alabama..
Smelley hopes to play baseball and possibly football at UA, according to
his father, Bart Smelley.
Smelley plans to enroll immediately and hopes to be eligible to play
baseball for the Crimson Tide in the 2009 season.
Chris Smelley, an All-State quarterback and catcher at American Christian
Academy in Tuscaloosa, recently finished his sophomore season at South
Carolina. He completed 16 of 31 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown in
South Carolina’s 31-16 loss to Iowa in the Outback Bowl.
Smelley played in 12 games this season, passing for 1,922 yards and 14
touchdowns.
