TUSCALOOSA | It wasn’t the most dominating performance of the season, but it was good enough for the University of Alabama gymnastics team to win the Northeast Regional and advance the NCAA Championships.
Needing just 49.0 on its final event, balance beam, to edge Oklahoma for first, and having an early fall, Alabama scored a dramatic season-high 49.35. Ashley Priess scored 9.95 and Kassi Price returned from a broken finger for a 9.9 to match teammate Caitlin Sullivan’s score.
No. 3 Alabama finished with a 197.0 total, ahead of No. 9 Oklahoma (196.6), and No. 15 Missouri (196.0). Central Michigan finished fourth, ahead of New Hampshire and Maryland.
The victory was Alabama’s 24th regional title, the most in NCAA history, and earned its 27th consecutive trip to the NCAA meet, which will be held April 16-18 in Lincoln, Neb.
