The Tuscaloosa News Top 50 prospects in the state of Alabama was released July 4 with several players knocking on the door to make the next release after their senior season.

The pre-season Tuscaloosa News Top 50 list comes from many variables such as eyeing prospects in their junior season in 2008, watching game film (not just highlights), attending combines in the spring as well as camps, 7-on-7 tournaments and talking with high school coaches all across the state.

Several players who earned a spot on the prestigious list have already given their verbal pledge to the school of their choice with the top four players committed to Alabama. The top four also rank in the same order in the Scout.com Alabama Top 50.

Alabama commitments ranked outside the top four include Nick Perry, safety from Prattville High School who ranks No. 8, Deion Belue, cornerback from Deshler High School in Tuscumbia ranks No. 11 and Wilson Love, defensive tackle from Mountain Brook High School landed at No. 14.

The Tide remains in battles for the signatures of C.J. Mosley (No. 5), Scout.com four-star linebacker from Theodore High School, Corey Grant (No. 6), four-star running back from Opelika High School and LaDarius Owens (No.9), three-star outside linebacker from Jess Lanier High School in Bessemer.

It's possible for new names to make the final edition of the post-season Tuscaloosa News Top 50 with others falling from the pre-season list. The senior season will play a huge role along with remaining combines and 7-on-7 tournaments which will take place throughout the remainder of the summer.

Malcolm Johnson, wide receiver from Northridge High School in Tuscaloosa, is a name on the recruiting radar. He was a standout at a recent camp at Mississippi State and quickly earned a scholarship offer from the Bulldogs. He has been receiving interest from Alabama, Florida State, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Johnson made 41 catches for 492 yards and nine touchdowns during the 2008 season.

Gabriel Chambers, wide receiver from Cherokee County High School in Centre, is an electrifying athlete who will catch a lot of passes this fall from his quarterback Coty Blanchard. Chambers received a lot of interest from the SEC schools, and gave a commitment to Arkansas State. He remains open with his options and plans to camp in Tuscaloosa July 19.

Other in-state offensive players who are on the Tuscaloosa News Top 50 ‘watch list' include Calvin Jenkins, quarterback from Auburn High School, Jeremiah Tullidge, quarterback from Tuscaloosa Academy in Tuscaloosa, Jamaal Bess, running back from Athens High School, Tim Barnett, running back from Clarke County High School in Grove Hill, Johnny Lockett, running back from Sweet Water High School, and A.T. Thomas, running back from Coosa Christian High School in Gadsden.

The ‘watch list' continues with Todd Neal, athlete from Theodore High School, Seth Reedy, offensive guard from Piedmont High School, Derrick Thomas, athlete from Northview High School in Dothan, Marcus Washington, running back from Foley High School, Ryan Williams, athlete from Pelham High School, Jeremy Nicholson, wide receiver from W.S. Neal High School in Brewton, Preston Hatcher, offensive tackle from Northview High School in Dothan and John Hix, offensive center from Auburn High School.

A player on the defensive side of the ball looking to make the post-season list is Chase Garnham, outside linebacker from Fairhope High School. Garnham has received scholarship offers from Southern Miss and UAB. He is 6-foot-2, 200-pounds and was clocked at a 4.38-forty at the UAB camp. He plans to attend the Alabama camp July 19.

Emmanuel Omere, defensive end from Jess Lanier High School in Bessemer, is a prospect who caught the attention of several schools when coaches were scouting LaDarius Owens. Omere has been on a couple of unofficial visits to Alabama. He attended the Tide's lineman camp and plans to return July 19.

Additional defensive prospects who could make the list include, but not limited to, Anthony Wilson, defensive end from Homewood High School, Marquee Reddrick, defensive tackle from Clay-Chalkville High School, Whit Whitfield, middle linebacker from Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham, Bryan Steele, outside linebacker from Cullman High School, Pierre Warren, safety from Marbury High School, Max Woerner, safety from Foley High School and Brandon Ellis, safety from Robertsdale High School.

The Top 50 also has players who could make a jump from their original ranking within the Top 50.

LaDarius Owens has a chance to move up with a big senior season. He was very impressive during the spring and could vault into the top five.

Deion Belue is right outside the top 10, and he could move up a few spots after watching a recent 7-on-7 performance and reviewing the 2008 season.

A couple of big defensive linemen who will receive close attention during the season is Carlos Gray (No. 29), from Pinson Valley High School and Jared Morse (No. 31), from Oxford High School.

Gray has been a summer camp standout and received an offer from Tennessee. He has attended two Alabama camps and has the Tide's attention. Morse's stock is on the rise as well.
