NEW ORLEANS | Former University of Alabama All-Southeastern Conference guard Shondra Johnson was named women’s basketball assistant coach at Tulane University on Friday.

Johnson suited up for the Crimson Tide from 1998-02 and currently ranks seventh all-time in scoring with 1,411 points.

Johnson‘s coaching career began in 2003 at Chamlette High School in St. Bernard Parish just outside of New Orleans. While there, she earned district and state coach of the year honors following an undefeated championship season.

In addition to Chamlette, Johnson also had coaching stops at the Brookwood School in Thomasville, Ga., Tuscaloosa Academy and Samford University in Birmingham.

In 2007, she led Brookwood to the state finals and claimed regional coach of the year recognition. The next season Brookwood would advance to the state final four. As a member of the Samford coaching staff, Johnson worked primarily with the guards and helped to monitor the academic progress of the team, organize on-campus recruit visits and coordinate the national recruiting efforts for the Bulldogs.

Johnson continues to be one of the most decorated student-athletes in the Alabama women’s basketball record books where she ranks top ten in six career categories. Aside from being No. 7 on the scoring ledger, she is currently No. 2 in free throws made with 534 and free throws attempted with 742, No. 3 in assists with 525, No. 5 in steals with 176 and No. 8 in games started with 91. Johnson led the Tide in scoring and assists for three straight seasons and was an All-SEC second team member in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

Johnson was drafted by the Houston Comets in the third round of the 2002 WNBA Draft.
