TUSCALOOSA | Just about the time Del Howell had made up his mind that he would be returning to the University of Alabama for his senior baseball season, the Milwaukee Brewers made the left-handed pitcher an offer he couldn’t refuse.
The former prep state Mr. Baseball and American Christian Academy star signed Saturday night with the Brewers, who chose him in the 15th round of June’s amateur draft.
As late as the middle of last week, Howell was 90 percent sure he would be returning to UA, but a final round of talks with the major league club resulted in a deal that is sending him into the professional ranks. It all changed with a phone call last Wednesday night.
“They met what I had asked for,” Howell said. “I always dreamed of signing a professional contract. I’m excited, ready to go.
“It’s a good opportunity for me to get started.”
The 6-foot-3, 21-year-old pitcher was the 466th overall pick of the draft. A source familiar with the situation said Howell was contacted by Milwaukee officials in the earlier rounds of the draft with a six-figure offer.
Howell will not comment on the specifics of his signing bonus or contract.
After taking a physical in Milwaukee on Tuesday or Wednesday, Howell will report to the Arizona Brewers, the team’s Rookie League affiliate in Phoenix.
