Nelson, White among top baseball prospects

TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama junior Jimmy Nelson and sophomore Tyler White were named among the Florida Summer Collegiate League’s Top 10 prospects in a recent survey compiled by “Baseball America.”
Nelson was the league’s No. 2 prospect this summer, while White checked in as the league’s No. 6 prospect, while playing for the DeLand Suns. The pair of right-handers helped the Suns to a 25-13 overall record and the 2009 FSCL regular-season title.
Nelson was 4-4 with a 2.76 ERA in 11 games this summer. He led the FSCL in innings pitched (58.2) and strikeouts (75) and had the eighth-best ERA (2.76). He was also named to the FSCL All-Star Team.
He tossed six shutout innings against Leesburg on June 11 and recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts against Leesburg on June 17 and again on July 7. He won his first three decisions, including two shutouts.
White appeared in 14 games and led the league with seven saves. He also recorded 35 strikeouts in 17 innings of work on the mound. He notched his first save against Clermont (2 innings, 4 strikeouts) on June 10 and got the final save of the season in a playoff win over Clermont on July 10.
