TUSCALOOSA | Stillman College basketball fans can get a sneak preview of coach Michael Grant’s men’s team tonight as the Tigers play Talladega College in an exhibition game. Even though it won’t count, it’s a game Grant wants to win.
“I think our guys are really kind of tired of practicing against each other,” said Grant, who is starting his second season at Stillman.
“Practices have been kind of boring. I’m really excited to see these guys get after it and just kind of see where we stand before we open up the season. It just gives us a good indication right now to see where our team is.”
Grant said he expecting improvement. Stillman finished at 7-20 in his first season.
“I’m basically going to play the guys that know what’s going on,” he said. “If you don’t understand the offense, then it’s not your time to play right now.”
Stillman’s potential starting lineup includes junior Rakee Anderson at point guard; senior Marquell Jones at guard; junior Skyler Williams at small forward; sophomore Omari Murray at power forward; and senior Gerard DeVaughn at center.
“I think that’s a pretty solid group for us right now,” Grant said.
“Then I think there’s about four or five other guys who are ready to play. If we want to play a fast-paced game and press teams, we have to be able to have good numbers. But you have to be well-conditioned too. I think these guys did a real good job in our conditioning program.”
Grant said he’s been impressed with sophomore Lee Riley, the No. 2 point guard. Terry Rice is a sophomore who will play behind Jones.
Senior Johnny Thomas is a returning guard, and Jonathan Flint could provide depth at forward.
“Johnny Thomas’ energy has been unbelievable,” Grant said.
Junior forward Curtis Comack and freshman forward Torrean Walker have missed practice time with injuries, but Grant said he hopes to have both players available early in the season.
Stillman will travel to Mississippi for an exhibition game at Mississippi Valley State on Monday. The Tigers open the season at Clark Atlanta University on Nov. 21. Stillman’s first official home game is Dec. 5 against Fort Valley State.
