Buyout negotiations are underway between Avery Johnson, the head basketball coach at the University of Alabama, and UA officials, sources close to the decision-making process told The Tuscaloosa News on Thursday.

No agreement has been reached but talks will be ongoing.

The decision to replace Johnson cane after Alabama’s 80-79 loss to Norfolk State in the opening round of the NIT on Wednesday night.

Johnson is currently due $8 million on his contract, which runs through 2023. He replaced Anthony Grant as UA coach following the 2015 season.

Johnson was 75-62 in four seasons at Alabama, including 34-38 in the SEC. Alabama reached the postseason all four years under Johnson. The Crimson Tide appeared in the 2018 NCAA tournament and advanced to the round of 32, its first appearance in the tournament since 2012.
