Four-star point guard Jared Butler committed to Alabama on Monday. He chose Alabama over Butler, Virginia, Texas, USC and Wichita State.

Butler made the announcement on his Twitter account.

According to the 247Sports composite, the 6-2/180-pound guard is the No. 3 player from Louisiana and the No. 15 point guard in the 2018 class. He’s the No. 89 overall player in his class.

The Reserve, La. native took his official visit on Sept. 9 and received his official offer on May 6.

He joins a crowded backcourt, with several other point guards on roster.

Butler is the first player in Alabama’s recruiting class for the coming season after having the No. 8 recruiting class last year.

Alabama head coach Avery Johnson cannot comment directly on a prospect, although he and other Crimson Tide coaches put easily-interpreted messages of excitement on their social media accounts immediately after Butler’s announcement.

Johnson said last week at his media availability that Alabama wanted to sign “one or two” prospects in the early period, then add additional signees as needed in the spring.
