BIRMINGHAM – Alabama sophomore forward Galin Smith was named to the Southeastern Conference’s Community Service Team for men’s basketball, the league office announced on Monday. Smith is Alabama’s representative on the 14-man team that honors players’ exemplary service to their communities.
The Clinton, Miss., native arrived on campus in 2017 and is one of the team leaders in total hours served in the community. Smith has been a fixture at the Alberta Unity Project, which is spearheaded by the University of Alabama athletics department. He assisted in rebuilding projects and helped mentor young children in the community. He has also volunteered in the Alberta City Fall Festival and the College Hill Baptist Church Fall Festival.
On campus, Smith was a part of the Crimson Kickoff Mixer, a welcome event spearheaded by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for incoming freshman and transfer student-athletes. He has participated in other SAAC events such as Project Angel Tree and Halloween Extravaganza.
The 6-foot-9 forward is one of the top reserves on the team, having played in 27 games this season and making seven starts. He is averaging 3.5 points and 2.1 rebounds and 11.7 minutes per game. His 53.4 percent (39-of-73) shooting from the field ranks second-best on the team.
