University of Alabama basketball and baseball play-by-play announcer Chris Stewart was in a Birmingham hospital on Monday night after what UA director of athletics Greg Byrne described as a “serious medical procedure.”
The Stewart family did not immediately release details of the procedure.
“Our thoughts (and) prayers are with Chris Stewart and his family,” Byrne said via his Twitter account. “Chris is recovering from a serious medical procedure and all signs so far following surgery are positive.”
On Monday, Lee Tracey filled in for Stewart as host of the “Hey Coach” radio show. Tom Stipe, the show’s producer, said he had spoken with Stewart’s wife, Christy, and confirmed that Stewart had an emergency medical situation.
“It’s been a long day,” Stipe said as the program opened. “All we’ve been doing all day is checking on Chris and praying for him.”
Stewart, 47 just completed his 16th season as Alabama’s basketball radio play-by-play announcer. He is also the sideline reporter for Alabama football radio broadcasts. He had most recently called all three games of Alabama’s baseball series at Texas A&M last weekend.
