There was a lot to take in today as the University of Alabama football team went through its fifth spring practice. The team was in full pads today and working outside at the start of the practice even as some light rain started to come down outside the Mal Moore Athletic Facility.
-Outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi was entertaining to watch as practice began. His unit was working on a turnover drill and he said “We lead the SEC in takeaways per game every year for a reason!” They switched to a drill where they were working on scooping the ball off the ground, and he said “This drill alone got Ryan Anderson a touchdown in the playoffs!” Former outside linebacker Ryan Anderson was hanging out right there watching the drill.
-Speaking of Anderson, there were a ton of former UA players taking in practice today. Heisman winner Derrick Henry was watching the running backs work. Tight end O.J. Howard was there (he’s in phenomenal shape). Former defensive lineman Wallace Gilberry and former defensive back HaHa Clinton-Dix were both there as well.
-Shaun Dion Hamilton started practice out doing some drills with head trainer Jeff Allen before joining the ILBs during position drills. Jared Mayden was also working with Allen.
-It was “Law Enforcement Day” at practice, with a few dozen police officers and other guests taking in practice.
Alabama’s next practice is on Monday afternoon. We’ll be back with notes then.
