Former Alabama coach Gene Stallings was chosen as the Crimson Tide’s representative for the SEC’s 2017 Football Legends Class, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Stallings was head coach at Alabama from 1990-96, going 70-16-1 as head coach of the Crimson Tide. He led Alabama to the 1992 national championship and won four division titles. He won several national coach of the year awards in 1992. Alabama won 28 straight games from 1991-93 under his leadership.
This year’s class of SEC Legends will be honored at the 2017 SEC Football “Weekend of Champions” on Dec. 1-2, coinciding with the conference championship game. Stallings and the other members of the class will be introduced during the game.
Fitzpatrick honored again
Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick kept hauling in awards this week after being named SEC co-defensive player of the week on Monday.
He was named the Bronko Nagurski national defensive player of the week on Tuesday. He was also named player of the week by the Lott Impact Trophy.
“It wasn’t just about me and not all of my plays are just me,” Fitzpatrick said. “I had a lot of teammates helping me out there, everyone flying to the ball, making plays.”
Fitzpatrick had five total tackles in Alabama’s win at Texas A&M with three tackles for loss, an interception and a forced fumble on special teams. He played four different positions on defense in the win.
