The Alabama Crimson Tide retained its No. 1 position in the College Football Playoff rankings, released Tuesday night, in the wake of last weekend’s 56-0 thumping of Mercer.
Auburn, Alabama’s Iron Bowl opponent Saturday, came in at No. 6 as the highest-ranked team with two losses. The Tigers are 9-2.
Alabama is 11-0 going into the final game of the regular season.
Miami (10-0) was ranked second, followed by Clemson (10-1), and Oklahoma (10-1). Wisconsin came in at No. 5, followed by theTigers.
Georgia (10-1), which will play the Alabama-Auburn winner in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta on Dec. 2, is ranked seventh.
Alabama has two victories over teams currently ranked in the CFP top 25: 14th-ranked Mississippi State and 18th-ranked LSU.
South Carolina came in at No. 23, giving the SEC six teams in the top 25.
The rankings are created by the committee that will choose the four teams that will compete in the national title playoff.
The semifinals will be played Jan. 1 at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The national championship game will be played Jan. 8 at the Mercedes-Benz Dome in Atlanta.
