ATLANTA — Alabama wide receiver Jerry Jeudy won the Biletnikoff Award on Saturday night, meaning he’s considered the most outstanding receiver in all of college football.
“I’m really surprised,” the sophomore said at the Home Depot College Football Awards ceremony. “All these other two guys really did a great job this year, too. So I knew it was going to be a tough decision.”
Massachusetts’ Andy Isabella and Oklahoma State’s Tylan Wallace were also up for the award.
Just a sophomore, Jeudy is the Crimson Tide’s leading receiver with 1,103 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has caught 59 passes, each of those going for an average of 18.7 yards. His longest reception so far is an 81-yarder.
“Just being the best that I can be to help my team and to get to the national championship,” Jeudy said. “Just the want to be great to help me as a person and to help my teammates.”
The 6-foot-1, 192-pound Florida native is averaging 84.8 receiving yards per game. He broke 100 yards in four of Alabama’s 13 games, with a season-high 147 yards versus Missouri. He had 136 against Ole Miss, 135 against Arkansas and 103 against LSU.
On Wednesday, LSU defensive back Greedy Williams could only compare covering Jeudy to covering former Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley, who was the Atlanta Falcons’ first-round draft pick earlier this year.
“He’s jukey,” Williams said. “He’s one of those guys that can juke left, right and forward. He’s analog. They call him analog. He’s a different kind of guy when it comes to that style of play.”
Said Georgia defensive back DeAndre Baker of Jeudy: “Guys like that, you can’t really shut them down. You got to just slow them down.”
The only other Alabama player to have even won the honor is Amari Cooper, and he did so back in 2014.
