No. 1-ranked Alabama comes into Saturday’s game against rival Tennessee with some questions that need answers. Here are four.
1. Will DeVonta Smith’s absence affect UA?
The Crimson Tide receiver is suspended for the first half after being ejected last week in College Station for throwing a punch late in the fourth quarter. It’s not as if Alabama is hurting at the position, but it might make a difference early.
2. More picks for Tua?
Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa ended a streak of 185 attempts without an interception last week against Texas A&M. Tennessee’s defense is second in the SEC with nine interceptions, including two each by Nigel Warrior and Jeremy Banks.
3. Will UT kick to Waddle?
Alabama punt returner Jaylen Waddle had a career day last week against Texas A&M with 128 return yards, third for most yards in a UA game. Tennessee opponents average just 4.8 yards per return this season. Waddle may have to earn his yards on Saturday.
4. Big day for Alabama’s defense?
Tennessee’s Jarrett Guarantano ranks 11th in passing in the SEC with 142 yards per game and has been sacked eight times. The Vols are 12th in the league in run offense with 146 yards per game. That number doesn’t translate to a positive day against an improving Tide defense.
