Alabama’s competition for more catches just got a little less crowded.
Redshirt junior wide receiver Tyrell Shavers has entered the transfer portal, as first reported by AL.com. Shavers graduated in December, which could make him a graduate transfer with immediate eligibility.
The Lewisville, Texas, native caught one pass for 20 yards last season. He also had a 14-yard carry, combining to be the only touches of his UA career.
Shavers was involved in two of UA’s blocked punts last season, one of them a positive experience and one a negative. Against Ole Miss, Ale Kaho blocked a punt that he was unable to handle, allowing Kaho to recover his own blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown. Two weeks later, at Texas A&M, Kaho blocked another punt, one Shavers fielded well on his way to the end zone.
Shavers was a four-star prospect, a top 100 prospect at any position and top 15 wide receiver nationally.
With Shavers out of the mix, UA will look to sophomore receiver John Metchie III and redshirt sophomore receivers Slade Bolden and Xavier Williams as likely candidates to join Devonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle as UA’s top four receivers. The trio of sophomores will have competition from freshmen Traeshon Holden and Thaiu Jones-Bell.
