SEC Media Days are moving on from Hoover.
The annual event that marks the unofficial start of the college football season for the conference will be held at College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta from July 16-19, the league office announced on Friday.
SEC Media Days will return to the Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover in 2019. The event is expected to rotate through various venues and cities after that, occasionally returning to Hoover. It had been held in the Birmingham/Hoover area every year since it started in 1985. It’s been held at the Wynfrey since 2001.
“SEC Football Media Days is a signature event for our conference and we are pleased the city of Atlanta will host this kickoff to the 2018 college football season,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a news release. “SEC Football Media Days is now added to Atlanta’s inventory of great events, which includes the annual SEC Football Championship Game and this season’s College Football Playoff Championship Game. We are looking forward to building an exciting week next July to feature our student-athletes and coaches.”
All 14 SEC teams attend the event over the course of four days, which hosts thousands of credentialed media members from around the southeast and the country.
SEC Media Days also became a favorite location for many Alabama fans to get autographs from head coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide players chosen to attend the event. Fans from several teams around the league stopped by the lobby of the Wynfrey, but Alabama fans formed a crowd every year when Saban and his entourage arrived.
Press conferences with the league’s head coaches will be held at the Hall of Fame, while the Omni Atlanta Hotel at CNN Center will be the location for radio row and other interviews and events.
“The Hall of Fame was relocated to Atlanta, the capital of college football, for events just like this and we are perfectly situated in the center of all the activity,” said Dennis Adamovich, CEO of the College Football Hall of Fame in the press release. “We are grateful to the SEC for allowing us the opportunity to host such an important event.”
