SAN JOSE, Calif. — No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Clemson arrived in Northern California, where they will play for the College Football National Championship a long way from home.
The Tigers were first to arrive at Mineta San Jose International Airport on Friday at about 4:15 p.m. Clemson, South Carolina, is about 2,560 miles from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, where the Tigers and Crimson Tide will play Monday night.
Alabama got in about 6:15 p.m. The Crimson Tide’s Tuscaloosa campus is about 2,280 miles from Santa Clara.
Clemson and Alabama are meeting in the playoff for the four straight season and third time for the championship. They have previously played title games in Glendale, Arizona, and Tampa, Florida, and last season they played a semifinal in New Orleans.
Alabama holds a 14-4 overall mark in the series against Clemson, including a 3-1 mark under head coach Nick Saban. Alabama defeated Clemson in the 2008 season opener, the 2016 CFP national title game and in last year’s CFP semifinal.
Saban, who has won five national championships at Alabama, is attempting to become the first college coach to win seven total championships. He is tied with former Alabama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant with six total.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, a former Alabama player, will try to lead the Tigers to their second national title in three years. Clemson won the championship for the 2016 season after defeating the Crimson Tide 35-31.
