Four former members of the Alabama men’s golf team will compete at the 2017 U.S. Open. Bud Cauley, Dru Love, Trey Mullinax, and Justin Thomas are set to compete in the event which will begin Thursday morning at the Erin Hills course in Erin, Wisconsin.
This will be Thomas’s third career start at the event and he has already earned three PGA Tour wins this season. His best finish at the U.S. Open was last year when he tied for 32nd.
Love is the least experienced of the foursome when it comes to the U.S. Open. He graduated following the 2016-17 season at Alabama after being sidelined for most of the year due to an injury. His father, Davis Love III played in the Open 23 times and even finished as a tie for second in 1996. This year rather than playing, he will be his son’s caddy. His grandfather, Davis Love Jr. also qualified for seven U.S. Opens .
Cauley has played in six PGA tours and this will be his second career U.S. Open after he made his professional debut at the 2011 Open when he finished tied for 63rd.
Mullinax will make his first appearance at the U.S. Open this year after earning his PGA Tour Card in 2016. He was on the 2013 and 2014 Alabama Crimson Tide men’s golf National Championship teams. This will be his 23rd career event on the Tour.
