SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Former University of Alabama star Haylie McCleney hit a home run to lead the USA Women’s National Team to a 6-0 softball victory over Venezuela on Tuesday at the Pan American Championships.
The event is a qualifier for the 2018 Women’s World Championship, which will be held in Japan, and the 2019 Pan Am Games, which will be held in Lima, Peru.
The USA took an early lead when Michelle Moultrie singled in a run in the first inning. Jazmyn Jackson hit a home run in the fourth and the USA had a three-run outburst in the sixth inning, keyed by McCleney’s home run, one of her three hits in the contest.
Ally Carda was the winning pitcher for the USA. Kelly Barnhill pitched eight outs for the save.
The USA will play Aruba and Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The event continues through Aug. 14.
