CHULA VISTA, Calif. – University of Alabama women’s golfers Kristen Gillman, Cheyenne Knight and Lauren Stephenson advanced to the match play round at the U.S. Women’s Amateur with their performances in Tuesday’s second round at the par-72, 6,423-yard San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif.
Former Alabama golfer Mia Landegren (74-76/150) finished at 6-over par to tie for 57th and will participate in a five-golfer playoff on Wednesday for the final four spots in the match play round. Landegren survived two playoff holes on Tuesday evening to advance to the Wednesday morning playoff.
Stephenson finished the stroke-play portion of the tournament at 2-under par (74-68/142) after a 4-under par second round to tie for seventh place. Gillman (67-76/143) finished at 1-under par to tie for 11th place. Knight (71-74/145) tied for 20th at 1-over par. All three have clinched berths in the match play Round of 64 on Wednesday.
Former Crimson Tide golfer Emma Talley became the first Alabama golfer to win the Women’s U.S. Amateur when she captured the title in 2013 at Charleston (S.C.) Country Club prior to her sophomore year. Gillman won the event in 2014 as a 16-year old.
