SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Former University of Alabama softball standout Haylie McCleney earned a gold medal with the USA Women’s National Team at the Pan American Championship. The USA defeated Mexico 9-0 in five innings the championship game Sunday, avenging an earlier defeat.
McCleney, playing center field and batting in the leadoff position, went 0-for-3 vs. Mexico in the title game. University of Florida star Kelly Barnhill threw a perfect game for the win.
In the semifinal round earlier in the day, McCleney went 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring two runs and driving in another to help the USA to an 11-3 victory over Canada in five innings.
A four-time All-American at Alabama, McCleney batted .613 over 11 games in the tournament, driving in five runs and scoring 17 times.
