STOCKTON, Calif. – Freshman Wilson Furr carded a second-round score of 8-under 64 on Tuesday to help the seventh-ranked Alabama men’s golf team vault into a tie for first at 14-under 562 after 36 holes at the NCAA Stockton Regional.
Furr collected nine birdies, including six over the final nine holes, en route to setting the program’s lowest 18-hole score in an NCAA Championship event. It ties for the fourth-lowest round score in program history. Furr shot a 63 in the second-round at the SEC Championships.
Furr entered the day in 37th after carding a 1-over 73 on Monday’s opening round but moved into a tie for fourth overall entering Wednesday’s final round of the three-day 54-hole event. He is at 7-under. His 33-spot improvement was the largest by any individual in the field.
Alabama is in a tie for first overall with unranked Iowa State. No. 43-ranked Kansas is a shot back (563) and in third. No. 18 Stanford (568) and No. 31 TCU (569) round out the top five.
Alabama’s Jonathan Hardee is in a tie for 16th at 3-under 141 and Davis Riley is 2-under. Riley, who rank 21st in the nation, eagled the par 4, 415-yard 10th hole to highlight a 3-under back nine. Davis Shore is in a tie for 23rd with a 1-under. Lee Hodges is in 58th overall with a 4-over.
The top five teams and the top individual finisher not on an advancing team will move on to the NCAA national championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma, May 25-30.
