COCHABAMBA, Bolivia — Alabama women’s tennis alumna Alexa Guarachi seized a pair of medals for Chile in the 2018 South American Sports Organization South American Games in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Guarachi and doubles partner Daniela Seguel won the gold medal, while Guarachi and mixed doubles teammate Gonzalo Lama Feliu claimed the bronze.
After a first round bye, Guarachi/Seguel cruised past three countries to secure the gold. The Chilean tandem topped Peru, 6-1, 7-6, defeated Colombia, 7-5, 6-2, and dominated Paraguay, 6-1, 6-1, to come out on top.
In mixed doubles, Guarachi/Feliu opened competition defeating Colombia, 6-2, 6-3, but then fell to Venezuela in a hard-fought, 7-6, 6-4, match. The Chileans responded with a 4-0, 4-2 victory over host country Bolivia for the bronze.
During her time at Alabama, Guarachi earned multiple All-America and All-SEC honors. Guarachi ended her career at the Capstone with 109 victories in singles, which is the most singles wins ever recorded by a player in Alabama history. She wrapped up her doubles campaign with teammate Courtney McLane with 69 wins, which tops the Tide’s all-time doubles list.
Up next, Guarachi and partner Seguel will represent Chile at the 2019 Pan-American Games in Lima, Peru, after earning an automatic bid.
