University of Alabama junior Lauren Stephenson and sophomore Kristen Gillman had their hand in a pair of victories Saturday as the United States moved out to a 9-3 lead on Great Britain and Ireland on Day 2 of the 2018 Curtis Cup at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y.
Gillman and her USA teammate, Wake Forest’s Jennifer Kupcho, downed Olivia Mehaffey and Sophie Lamb, 3-and-2, in the morning Four-Ball competition as part of a 3-0 USA sweep of Great Britain and Ireland.
Stephenson, who was one of two United States golfers who did not participate in the morning round, teamed up with Gillman to defeat Annabell Fuller and India Clyburn, 6-and-5, as the U.S. finished 2-1 in the afternoon Foursomes, giving the United States a 9-3 advantage heading into Sunday’s final day of competition.
The United States needs a win and one halved match among the eight Singles matches on Sunday to retake the Curtis Cup with 10.5 points. As the defending champion, Great Britain and Ireland would need seven points for 10 total points to retain it.
