MAKUHARI, Japan — The U.S. qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics by winning gold at the Softball World Championship on Sunday, defeating Japan 7-6 in 10 innings in the gold medal game.
Kelsey Stewart drove in the winning run with a walk-off single for the extra-innings win.
Former Alabama softball star Haylie McCleney, starting in center field and batting in the leadoff position, went 2-for-4 with a walk in the victory, scoring a run.
In 17 games with the U.S. national team on its summer tour, McCleney batted .426 (20 for 47) with three home runs, three doubles and nine RBIs. She drew 10 walks with three strikeouts, stole six bases and scored 19 runs.
