NEW YORK – Former Alabama women’s tennis player Alexa Guarachi, qualified for the main draw of the 2018 U.S. Open with partner Vera Lapko, who is from Belarus, over the weekend.

The tandem will open the tournament by taking on Nicole Gibbs and Sabrina Santamaria on Wednesday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, with the time to be announced.

This marks the second time this year that Guarachi has played in a Grand Slam tournament. She and former UA teammate Erin Routliffe fell in the first round of the main draw in Wimbledon in July.

Guarachi is currently ranked as the No. 80 doubles player in the country and became just the third Alabama women’s tennis player to qualify for the U.S. Open after Maya Jansen and Routliffe did so in 2015.
