The Alabama women’s tennis team picked up eight singles wins and two doubles victories on the first day of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic at the Alabama Tennis facilities on Friday.
Junior Ann Selim went 2-0 in singles on the day after winning in straight sets over Maryann Rompf (Wisconsin), 6-3, 6-3, and then cruising to a 6-2, 6-3, victory over Aleksandra Topalovic (Memphis), to reach the finals of the Paulina Bigos Draw.
After winning both of her singles matches, junior Luca Fabian advanced to the finals of the Bianca Svensson Draw. Fabian started singles with a come-from-behind victory over Ally Miller-Krasilnikov (Clemson), 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9), and then a straight set win over Tamara Racine (Mississippi State), 7-5, 6-2.
In other singles action, sophomore Moka Ito moved past No. 78 Alexandria Stiteler (South Alabama) via a walkover, before falling to No. 122 Ann Vrbenska (Ole Miss), 6-2, 6-1j, while junior Alba Cortina Pou won her first round match against Alisha Reayer (Memphis), 6-2, 6-2, before dropping her match to Vanja Klaric (USF), 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5).
Junior Jacqueline Pelletier earned a first-round victory over Andjelija Bozvoic (Indiana), 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9), and then fell to Alisa Diercksen (ECU), 7-5, 6-4. Junior Kimberley Gintrand dropped her first match against Ash Harvey (Air Force), 0-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9), and then bounced back with a, 6-2, 6-3, against Katja Fevralev (Western Michigan).
In doubles competition, Ito/Pelletier bested Jumamukhambetova/Potter (UT Martin), 6-2, while Gintrand/Selim defeated Kuo/Laskey (Air Force), 6-3, and Cortina Pou/Fabian fell to Fumagalli/Kerrigan (Air Force), 7-5.
The second round of doubles will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by the final round of doubles. After lunch, the event will conclude with the final round of singles.
