ATLANTA – The Alabama men’s and women’s golf teams closed out their fall schedules with second- and third-place finishes, respectively, at the 2018 East Lake Cup in Atlanta on Wednesday.
The Tide men dropped a 4-1 decision to Southeastern Conference rival Auburn in the men’s championship match, while the UA women rallied to defeat Arizona, 3-2, in the women’s consolation contest.
Sophomore Wilson Furr picked up the lone win for the Alabama men with a 2&1 victory over Auburn’s Jovan Rebula at the par-72, 7,430-yard East Lake Golf Club. Furr took the lead in his match on the ninth hole and held control until clinching with a par on 17. Senior Davis Riley and sophomore Davis Shore both fell by 2&1 scores to Trace Crowe and Jacob Solomon, respectively. Freshman Prescott Butler dropped a 3&2 decision to Brandon Mancheno and fellow freshman Frankie Capan III came up short in 4&3 match with Wells Padgett.
The Crimson Tide women’s team capped off its week with a 3-2 win over Arizona in the consolation match. After the Tide dropped the first two matches by identical 5&4 scores, junior Kenzie Wright picked up UA’s first with an 8&6 decision over Bianca Pagdanganan. Wright won seven of the first eight holes to cruise to the victory. Junior Jiwon Jeon then downed Yu-Sang Chang, 3&2, to even the match at 2-2 before sophomore Angelica Moresco clinched the win with a 3&2 victory over Sandra Nordaas.
The East Lake Cup concludes the fall schedule for both the Tide men and women. The women will open their spring schedule at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, Feb. 3-5, at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. The Tide men will kickoff their spring schedule at the Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 17-19, at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
