BATON ROUGE, La. – Senior Portious Warren shattered the University of Alabama’s women’s school record on the way to winning the LSU Invitational shot put title Saturday.
Warren became the first Crimson Tide female with a throw more than 60 feet in the shot put, posting a mark of 61-00.75, more than three feet better than her previous best. Her throw also ranks No. 1 in the nation this season and is the first over 60 feet this season. She also won the discus earlier in the day with a toss of 175-1.0.
Overall, the Tide won 11 events during the one-day meet. Samantha Zelden won the women’s javelin with a 154-11 throw. Chago Basso won the men’s shot put with a toss of 62-2.25. Shelby McEwen took top honors in the men’s high jump with a leap of 7-3.75. Abigail Kwarteng won the women’s high jump with a mark of 5-10.0. Kiara Williams soared to a career-best 21-3.25 to win the women’s long jump.
On the track, Alabama swept the top-four spots in the women’s 400 meters, with Natassha McDonald taking the win with a career-best 52.35. Alabama won both the men’s and women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Caroline Brooks posted a 11:05.00 to win the women’s side, and Elliott Miller took top honors for the men with a 9:41.28. D’Jai Baker, Takyera Roberson, Katie Funcheon and McDonald combined to win the 4×400-meter relay with a 3:36.02.
