BIRMINGHAM – Eleven members of the Alabama track and field teams earned Southeastern Conference honors during the 2019 outdoor season, the league office announced Tuesday.
Three seniors – Kord Ferguson, Gilbert Kigen and Portious Warren – earned first-team honors. Ferguson won the men’s discus, while Kigen took top honors in the men’s 10,000 meters and Warren won the women’s shot put to garner first-team recognition.
Three men and three women earned second-team All-SEC accolades during the outdoor season, including seniors Will Herrscher (men’s pole vault), Haley Teel (women’s shot put), Keitavious Walter (men’s 200 meters) and Kiara Williams (women’s long jump) as well as juniors Esther Gitahi (women’s 1,500 meters) and Shelby McEwen (men’s high jump). All six medaled at the 2019 SEC Championships in their respective events.
The Tide also had a pair of rookies earn Freshman All-SEC recognition, as the highest freshman finisher in an individual event. Bobby Colantonio Jr. earned the honor in the men’s hammer throw, while Noel Rotich took home the accolade in the men’s 5,000 meters.
The awards announcement came just days after qualified 15 women and six men to the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas following a strong showing at the East Preliminary meet in Jacksonville, Fla.
