NEW YORK CITY – According to a release sent out by the University of Alabama on Friday, history was made on Thursday as former University of Alabama women’s tennis player Alexa Guarachi became the first Crimson Tide women’s tennis alumna to win a Grand Slam main draw match after she and doubles partner Bernada Bera defeated Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya in the first round of the U.S. Open Women’s Doubles Draw. The duo won 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-2, to advance to the second round.
Guarachi is ranked No. 86 in the world in doubles. Guarachi’s 2019 U.S. Open appearance marks her sixth consecutive Grand Slam play. In 2019, she has competed at Wimbledon, the French Open, the Australian Open and the U.S. Open. In 2018 she competed at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon.
