BIRMINGHAM – The University of Alabama men’s tennis team won 14 of its 15 matches on Friday on the first day of the Samford Round Robin hosted by Samford University. The Crimson Tide went 3-0 in doubles play and won all but one singles match.
Alabama’s Riccardo Roberto and Avi Shugar, Sam Fischer and Alexey Nesterov, and Jeremy Gschwendtner and Marcelo Sepulveda Garza won their doubles matches. The Tide got singles wins from
Sepulveda Garza, Fischer and Gschwendtner, who all won in straight sets. Shugar won in three sets and Nesterov led in the third set before his opponent retired, giving Nesterov a singles win.
In the second round, all six Tide players won, with Roberto, Sepulveda Garza, Gschwendtner and Shugar winning in two sets. Fischer won his first set before his opponent retired. Nesterov won in three sets. Play continues on Saturday.
