LIMA, Peru – The University of Alabama’s Shallon Olsen added a second Pan American Games medal to her resume this week in Lima, Peru, taking bronze on the vault Tuesday afternoon after helping propel Canada to a silver medal in the team final on Saturday.
The Vancouver, British Columbia, native averaged a 14.183 to take third place on the vault after scoring a 14.400 on her first vault and a 13.966 on her second. Unlike collegiate competition, which has a maximum score of 10.0, international competition combines a difficulty and execution score for the final mark.
Yesenia Ferrera of Cuba, took silver while Olsen’s teammate Elsabeth Black won gold.
In Saturday’s team competition, she finished in the top 20 on the vault and floor exercise to help Team Canada finish second in Lima behind the United States.
The Pan American Games is the latest in a string of strong performances for the rising sophomore. She took gold on the vault at the Canadian National Championships at the end of May, scoring a 14.450.
A 2016 Olympic vault finalist, Olsen earned silver at the 2018 World Championships in October, when she became the first Canadian woman to earn a vault medal at Worlds. She posted a score of 14.516 to take second at Worlds, with Team USA’s Simone Biles winning gold.
