Alexis Osorio rightfully earned headlines for last weekend’s performance, but Alabama softball’s senior pitcher’s historic back-to-back outings overshadowed the hot bat of freshman Kaylee Tow.
Osorio tied an NCAA record with 21 strikeouts in seven innings against Fordham on Saturday, less than 24 hours after she threw a no-hitter in a victory over Boston College. The no-hitter was the fourth for the native of Riverside, Calif., not counting three others in which she was part of a combined no-hitter with one or more other pitchers.
While Osorio was mowing down batters, Tow was hammering the ball. The rookie outfielder from Madisonville, Ky., went 8-for-16 at the Easton Crimson Classic to bat .500 for the weekend. She had three multiple-hit games and included a home run and a double to enhance her showing at the plate.
Tow leads Alabama in batting average (.404), hits (23), runs (16) and home runs (5).
Alabama will visit Georgia Tech on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. game. The Crimson Tide (17-5) will visit Auburn for a three-game weekend series starting Friday to open SEC play. Auburn was swept in three games by LSU last weekend in its opening series in league play.
IN OTHER news involving the Alabama softball team, former player Charlotte Morgan was named Monday as head coach of the Cleveland Comets of the National Pro Fastpitch league. Morgan served as head coach of the Racers in 2017, going 26-24.
Morgan is also currently an assistant coach at Texas-Arlington. She has had previous stops at Maryland, Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State.
Morgan was a two-time SEC Player of the Year at Alabama, a three-time All-American and the 2010 winner of the Lowe’s Senior Class Award.
