Alabama's Jami Reed wins Commodore Classic cross country meet

NASHVILLE – The University of Alabama cross country teams opened the 2020 season in an all-Southeastern Conference meet at Vanderbilt’s Commodore Classic Saturday morning. Jami Reed led the Crimson Tide women to a trio of top-five finishes as individual champion, finishing the women’s 6K at Percy Warner Park with a time of 20:57.5. Her time was nearly 10 seconds ahead of second-place finisher, Sarah Chapman of Kentucky (21:07.2).

Kentucky won the women’s meet. Alabama placed second.

Alabama’s Mercy Chelangat placed third (21:14.4) and Esther Gitahi fourth (21:14.6).

In the men’s race, Alabama finished fourth at the Vaughn’s Gap Country Club course. Jacob Wiggers (25:36.1) was Alabama’s top finisher at 16th. Grady Shiflet (25:48) placed 21st in the 8K race, and Paul Selden (25:53.2) finished 23rd.

The Alabama cross country teams next compete at the FSU Invitational on Oct. 2. The SEC Championships are scheduled for Oct. 30 at LSU.
