NCAA softball tournament: Meet Oklahoma State's opponents in the Stillwater Regional
STILLWATER — Oklahoma State, the No. 5 overall seed in the NCAA softball tournament and the top seed in the Stillwater Regional, will face the Campbell Camels for the first time in program history when regional play opens at 1 p.m. Friday at Cowgirl Stadium.
In fact, OSU has played only seven total games against the other three teams in the regional, meaning some unfamiliar faces are in Stillwater this weekend.
Here’s a look at the three opponents coming in for the regional at OSU:
No. 2 seed Mississippi State Bulldogs
Record: 33-23 (8-15 SEC)
NCAA Tournament history: 16th appearance, 15-30 record.
Leading hitter: Senior infielder Fa Leilua leads the team in batting average at .340, home runs with 18 and RBIs with 45.
Leading pitcher: Senior Annie Willis has a 16-9 record with a 2.59 earned-run average and 144 strikeouts in 132 ⅓ innings pitched.
OSU’s all-time record vs. Bulldogs: 2-1
Last meeting: 9-4 Bulldogs win Feb. 23, 2018
Short hops: Mississippi State is coached by former OU first baseman Samantha Ricketts, who is in her second season. … The Bulldogs have never made it to the super-regional round of the NCAA Tournament. … Won eight of its last 10 games and five of its last six against ranked opponents. … The Bulldogs have made every NCAA Tournament field since 2017, and made eight of the last nine tournaments. … All 16 appearances have come since 2000.
No. 3 seed Boston Terriers
Record: 36-2 (21-1 Patriot League)
NCAA Tournament history: 11th appearance, 7-20 record
Leading hitter: Junior catcher/infielder Nicole Amodio has a .400 average and team-best 33 RBIs, while tying for the team lead with three home runs.
Leading pitcher: Senior Ali DuBois has a 25-0 record and 0.89 ERA with 151 strikeouts in 149 innings.
OSU’s all-time record vs. Terriers: 4-0
Last meeting: 7-1 Cowgirls win March 16, 2013
Short hops: Boston has twice made it to an NCAA regional final, in 1996 and 2009, but has never reached the super-regional round. … Eight of its tournament appearances have come since 2009. … The Terriers have only hit 15 home runs this season, but have allowed just 14. … Head coach Ashley Waters, in her sixth season, has guided the Terriers to four Patriot League titles. … Boston and Mississippi State have met only once, with Mississippi State winning in 2000.
No. 4 seed Campbell Camels
Record: 27-17 (15-3 Big South Conference)
NCAA Tournament history: Fourth appearance, 3-7 record
Leading hitter: Senior outfielder Destini England was the Big South Player of the Year with a .356 batting average, seven doubles, nine triples and 19 stolen bases.
Leading pitcher: Redshirt freshman Georgeanna Barefoot has a 13-7 record and 2.43 ERA with 110 strikeouts in 127 innings.
OSU’s all-time record vs. Camels: First meeting
Short hops: A private university located in Buies Creek, North Carolina, Campbell is making its first trip to an NCAA regional since 2009. … The Camels won the Big South regular season title and the conference tournament crown. … Coached by Sharonda McDonald-Kelley, a Houston native who played college softball at Texas A&M, the Camels recruit Texas heavily. The current roster has six players from Texas and five from North Carolina.
