The Detroit Tigers selected Alabama junior right-handed pitcher Dylan Smith in the third round with the 74th overall pick, a slot worth $844,200.

Smith, a native of Stafford, Texas, was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 18th round of the 2018 draft but instead chose to head to Tuscaloosa.

He finished 2021 as Alabama's leader in innings pitched (98⅓). His 113 strikeouts were the third-most for a single season in Alabama history.

Those 113 strikeouts tied him for eighth in the SEC this season and 30th in the country.

One of Smith's noteworthy performances from his junior season came in the NCAA Tournament while facing Rider in the Ruston Regional. He pitched Alabama's first complete game since 2019 as he had seven strikeouts with no walks, one run and seven hits.

Smith earned a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament team for the Ruston Regional.
