Alabama football vs. Mercer score predictions from The Tuscaloosa News sports staff

The Tuscaloosa News

Alabama football hosts Mercer for its 2021 home opener Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The top-ranked defending national champion Crimson Tide will look to keep its momentum after a victory over Miami.

Here's how the sports staff at The Tuscaloosa News sees the outcome:

What are we measuring here, exactly? Nick Saban’s forbearance? Looking ahead to Florida? Mercer’s players may enjoy the atmosphere, if not the actual event, and they are paying the bills for the rest of the year, so good for them.

Jerell Rushin

Alabama 62, Mercer 3

The first game with 100% capacity allowed in Bryant-Denney Stadium since 2019 will be similar to home Alabama games from last season with reduced crowds. The starting offense will be cleaner than it was against Miami before letting the reserves in.

Maxwell Donaldson

Alabama 63, Mercer 7

Nick Saban rarely tries to upstage opponents like Mercer, but Alabama's offense rolls here. The defense continues its performance from last week in a near-shutout performance.

Alabama comes back home and handles business. Back-ups will get a lot of playing time to prepare for Florida.

This should be nothing but a cake walk for Nick Saban and Co. The Tide's immaculate defense will be too much for the Bears, even while playing through injuries.

Don't let the string of recent FCS over FBS upsets in Week 1 fool you. Alabama simply has too much talent to drop its home opener to a team like Mercer.

After looking very impressive in their opener, the Bears will struggle Saturday against the No. 1 team in the country. Alabama is on another planet compared to Point University.
