A petition was launched Wednesday to dedicate the press box at Bryant-Denny Stadium to the late Tuscaloosa News sports editor and columnist Cecil Hurt.

Hurt, 62, died Tuesday of complications from pneumonia.

The petition, started by Alabama sports blog Roll 'Bama Roll, was sent to Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne, the University of Alabama, the university's Board of Trustees and Gov. Kay Ivey.

The petition requests the unnamed press box at Alabama's football stadium be named the "Cecil Hurt Memorial Press Box at Bryant-Denny Stadium."

Roll 'Bama Roll wrote in the description of the petition that "mourning is not a proper send-off" for Hurt.

"For as good as a man as Cecil was, he was an equally talented writer, and a passionate reporter. Honoring that consummate professionalism, the work that he was in love with in the one place on earth he loved the most, is only fitting," the petition description said.

At the time of publication, the petition had 1,305 signatures out of the target 1,500 signatures.

The Tuscaloosa News invites its readers to share their remembrances of Cecil Hurt and his impact on them through his words and their interactions with him, whether in person or on social media. Send them to
