Alabama football announces 2022 A-Day Game date, will honor Wilbur Jackson, John Mitchell

The 2022 Alabama football A-Day Game will be played on Saturday, April 16, in Bryant-Denny Stadium, UA's athletics department announced Friday.

The game will kick off at 2 p.m.

The game is expected to feature members of the Crimson Tide's highly-ranked recruiting class as well as new transfers such as Jahmyr Gibbs, Jermaine Burton and Eli Ricks. 

Former Crimson Tide players Wilbur Jackson and John Mitchell will be honored for paving the way for African-American athletes at the University of Alabama.

Jackson was the first Black scholarship athlete for Alabama football  in 1970. In 1971, Jackson played in his first game for Alabama. He was captain of the 1973 championship team, was drafted ninth overall by the San Francisco 49ers and had a nine-year career in the NFL. 

Mitchell, a Mobile native, transferred to Alabama from Eastern Arizona Junior College. During his time with the Crimson Tide, Mitchell earned All-SEC, All- American and team captain honors. Mitchell became the first Black coach for Alabama football under the late Paul W. "Bear" Bryant in 1973. 

Alabama has led the nation in spring game attendance for the last 15 years.
