What to know about Alabama basketball's possible opponent Notre Dame in 2022 NCAA Tournament
Alabama basketball could face Notre Dame to open the 2022 NCAA Tournament on Friday in San Diego if the Fighting Irish win their First Four matchup. Here's what to know about Notre Dame:
Despite finishing second in the regular season to Duke, the Fighting Irish (22-10, 15-5 ACC) fell to ACC tournament champion Virginia Tech in their first conference tournament game.
Ending a tournament drought
This is the first NCAA Tournament appearance for Notre Dame in five years. The last time they made it in 2017, the No. 5 seed Fighting Irish survived a scare against 12th-seeded Princeton before falling to West Virginia in the round of 32. Notre Dame last made the postseason in 2018, when it fell to Penn State in the second round of the NIT.
First postseason game against Alabama
Notre Dame and Alabama never have faced off in postseason play, but the two have come close. In 2002, the Crimson Tide was the second seed in the South Region while the Fighting Irish were seeded eighth. However, both lost in the second round – Notre Dame to No. 1 seed Duke and Alabama to No. 10 Kent State.
